7-Day New Member Activation Plan

A focused first-week plan for getting new Skool community members from “just joined” to “actively engaged” within 7 days. This plan combines DMs, content, and community touchpoints to maximize early activation.

Why the First 7 Days Matter

Research across online communities shows:

Your job in week 1: get them to experience value and take action.

The 7-Day Plan

Day 0 (Join Day): Immediate Welcome

Timing: Within 1 hour of joining

Actions:

  1. Send welcome DM (personal, with a question)
  2. Tag them in the welcome thread
  3. Point them to the “Start Here” resource

Welcome DM:

Hey [Name]! Welcome to [Community Name] — really glad you are here.

I am [Your Name]. I want to make sure you get value immediately, so here is where I would start:

→ [Link to Start Here post or top module]

Also — what is your #1 goal with [topic] right now? I want to make sure I point you in the right direction.

Success metric: They reply to the DM.

Day 1: Intro Post Prompt

Timing: 24 hours after joining (if no intro posted)

Actions:

  1. Check if they posted an introduction
  2. If yes: like it, comment thoughtfully, ask a follow-up question
  3. If no: send nudge DM

Nudge DM:

Hey [Name]! Quick thought — dropping a short intro post is the best way to get connected with other members here.

Does not need to be long! Just:
- Who you are
- What you do
- What you are working on right now

Everyone is super friendly. Here is where to post: [link]

Success metric: They post an intro.

Day 2: Value Delivery

Timing: 48 hours after joining

Actions:

  1. Send a DM with a specific resource tailored to what they mentioned
  2. Make sure they have access to the right classroom content

DM:

Hey [Name]! Based on what you shared about [their goal], I think you will really like this:

→ [Link to specific post/module/resource]

It covers [brief description]. Let me know what you think!

Success metric: They consume a piece of content.

Day 3: Community Connection

Timing: 72 hours after joining

Actions:

  1. Tag them in a relevant discussion
  2. Or: connect them with a member who has similar interests/goals
  3. Or: invite them to an upcoming live event

DM:

Hey [Name]! There is a great discussion happening right now that I think is relevant to you:

→ [Link to post]

[Member Name] shared something about [topic] that connects to what you mentioned. Would love to hear your take!

Success metric: They comment on someone else’s post.

Day 4: Participation Prompt

Timing: 96 hours after joining

Actions:

  1. Create an easy win opportunity for them
  2. Ask them a direct question in a post or DM
  3. Lower the barrier to contribution

DM (if still not posting publicly):

Hey [Name]! We have a quick question thread going today — would love your input:

→ [Link to simple discussion prompt]

No expertise needed, just your honest experience. Even a one-liner is great!

Success metric: They make their first public comment (beyond intro).

Day 5: Recognition

Timing: 5 days after joining

Actions:

If they have been engaging:

If they are still quiet:

Public recognition example:

Great point by [Name]! This is exactly the kind of insight that makes this community great.

Success metric: They feel valued and seen.

Day 6: Deeper Engagement

Timing: 6 days after joining

Actions:

  1. Invite them to go deeper (attend event, start a module, join a challenge)
  2. Introduce a next-level commitment

DM:

Hey [Name]! You have been crushing it in the first week.

Quick heads up — we have [event/challenge/new content] coming up on [date] that I think would be perfect for you.

Here are the details: [link]

Would be great to have you there!

Success metric: They commit to a future engagement.

Day 7: Week-1 Wrap-Up

Timing: 7 days after joining

Actions:

  1. Send a wrap-up DM
  2. Ask for feedback
  3. Set expectations for what comes next

A few quick questions:
1. What has been most valuable so far?
2. Anything you wish we had more of?
3. Any questions I can help with?

Also — here is what to look forward to next week: [brief preview]

Glad you are here! 🙌

Success metric: They reply with feedback, indicating investment.

Activation Scorecard

Track each new member against these milestones:

Milestone Target Day Weight
Replied to welcome DM Day 0
Posted introduction Day 1 ⭐⭐
Consumed first resource Day 2
Commented on another post Day 3–4 ⭐⭐⭐
Participated in discussion Day 4–5 ⭐⭐
Attended event or completed module Day 6–7 ⭐⭐

Scoring:

Scaling for Multiple New Members

Community Size Approach
1–5 new members/week Fully manual, highly personalized
5–15 new members/week Template-based with personalization
15+ new members/week Automation with personal touchpoints

For high-volume communities, the core DM sequence can be automated while keeping Day 3 (connection) and Day 7 (feedback) as manual, personalized touchpoints.

Common First-Week Mistakes

  1. Only sending one welcome message — it takes 5–7 touchpoints to activate someone
  2. Being too generic — reference their specific goals or intro
  3. Overwhelming with content — give one thing at a time, not 10 links
  4. Not following up on silence — if they do not engage, nudge (gently)
  5. Expecting them to figure it out — guide them step by step
