Skool DM Sequence Template

Pre-written DM sequences for Skool community owners who want to onboard, activate, and retain members through direct messages without sounding robotic or pushy.

Why DM Sequences Work

Direct messages are the highest-engagement channel inside Skool. Members are far more likely to read and respond to a DM than to see a post in the feed. A structured DM sequence turns passive members into active participants.

The Core DM Sequence

Day 0: Welcome DM

Goal: Make the member feel seen and prompt a reply.

Hey [Name]! Welcome to [Community Name].

I am [Your Name], and I run this community. Wanted to personally say welcome.

Quick question — what is your #1 goal with [topic] right now? I want to make sure you get pointed to the right stuff from day one.

Why it works: Personal, asks a question, signals that you care about their specific situation.

Day 3: Activation DM

Goal: Get them to take their first action if they have not already.

Hey [Name], just checking in — how are you finding the community so far?

If you have not already, I would recommend checking out [specific resource/post/module]. It is one of the most popular things in the group and super relevant to what you mentioned.

Let me know if you have any questions!

Why it works: Provides a specific next step. Reduces the “where do I start” paralysis.

Day 7: First Contribution Nudge

Goal: Get them to post or comment publicly for the first time.

Hey [Name]! Quick thought — we have a [discussion/challenge/thread] happening right now about [topic].

Would love to hear your take on it. Even a quick comment helps — and the community is super supportive.

Why it works: Lowers the barrier to first contribution. Removes fear of judgment.

Day 14: Rescue Message

Goal: Re-engage members who joined but have gone quiet.

Hey [Name], noticed you have been quiet lately — totally understand, life gets busy.

Just wanted to let you know we have [upcoming event/new content/recent win] happening and I think it would be really valuable for you.

No pressure at all — just wanted to make sure you knew about it. Is there anything I can help you with?

Why it works: Non-judgmental, provides a reason to come back, opens the door for dialogue.

Day 30: Retention Check-in

Goal: Gauge satisfaction and prevent silent churn.

Hey [Name]! You have been in [Community Name] for about a month now.

How is it going? Are you getting value from the group?

I am always looking for ways to improve things, so if there is anything you wish we had more of (or less of), I am all ears.

Why it works: Shows you are paying attention. Catches dissatisfaction before they cancel.

Tips for Better DM Sequences

  1. Always ask a question — it increases reply rates dramatically
  2. Keep messages short — under 100 words performs best
  3. Reference something specific — generic DMs feel automated
  4. Do not pitch in the first DM — earn trust before selling
  5. Time DMs for when members are active — check your Skool analytics

Scaling DMs Without Losing the Personal Touch

For communities under 50 members, manual DMs work fine. Between 50–200, it starts getting hard to keep up. Over 200 and you need a system.
